Timeline
The successful design and performance of buildings relies less on past precedents and more on the application of building science, critical thinking and closely tracking the latest innovations. Pretiumʼs journey began with two restless innovators who created a company that has changed the industry.
1973
The origins of what became Pretium
Engineering began with the vertically integrated C3 Group, which began delivering multi-disciplinary engineering and contracting services more than a half century ago.
1983
One of the great influences on the founding partner of Pretium, Lou Reginato, was Gustav “Gus” Handegord, a legendary building scientist and educator. Gus was a leading academic and, later, a leader at the Division of Building Research, National Research Council of Canada, who innovated an evidence-based approach that was a mix of physics and storytelling to solve complex problems. He was co-author of the book “Building Science for a Cold Climate”, published in 1983 and later developed a course “Building Science and the Building Envelope”.
2004
Inspired by his mentor Gus Handegord, senior building science engineer Lou Reginato founded Pretium along with senior structural engineer, Larry McCuaig. They set out to elevate the
engineering services of the C3 Group by
launching Pretium Engineering, leveraging
their in-depth knowledge and experience in
building science. Murray Gamble, President
of the C3 Group, joined them as a founding
partner in Pretium and became a critical
part of the company’s strategic direction.
2004 – 2007
In Breslau, Ontario, Pretium grew its core team of structural and building science engineers. A key member of the original team, Mike Piccin, set the bar for technical excellence and providing quality solutions to clients.
2007
Dave Moore, a past colleague of both Larry and Lou joined the team to start the Burlington office. Dave shared many of the same philosophies as our founders, having also been influenced by “Gus” Handegord who introduced him to Lou sometime in the late nineteen nineties. Dave brought his technical experience and business development skills to Pretium.
2009
Pretium experienced monumental growth and change when they approached John Pogacar, the owner of Anderson Building Sciences Inc. to join forces. John became President and expanded Pretium’s presence to Toronto and strengthened the firm’s roof consulting line of business. The new company was named Pretium Anderson.
2014
With a strong presence in Breslau, Burlington, and Toronto, the Pretium Anderson team expanded from five team members to nearly 30.
2015
Pretium President John Pogacar recruited Nadine Cowan, a senior building science engineer to establish a new construction group, expanding the firm’s building enclosure third-party review offerings, with a keen expertise for Tarion Bulletin 19R services. Also in 2015, Dave approached Dale Kerr and Gerry Genge of GRG Building Consultants (GRG), a small but successful ten-person engineering firm based out of Newmarket to join the team.
2018
Now 70 employees, Pretium Anderson quickly outgrew their individual operating model, where each office functioned as its own company. They decided to merge all offices under one name and company — Pretium Engineering Inc. Gerald R. Genge, was named President of the new firm and the company launched a new slogan, representative of its new journey–Working Together, Better.
2019
Pretium acquires Fishburn Building Sciences Group, a successful firm with a 50-year history in providing roofing and forensic consulting services, led by Douglas Fishburn. With this acquisition, Pretium’s roofing experience became preeminent in the industry.
2020
Gerald Genge retires, making way for Dave Moore to step into the role of President. Dave fosters a commitment to making Pretium a “Best in Class” company in terms of technical quality, deep-rooted and long-lasting client relationships, team member happiness, and development.
2024
Pretium celebrates 20 years in business, encompassing more than 90 team members across five major markets.
